Car insurance for newcomers to Ontario

Years of driving before you moved to Canada can lower your price, but only if you can prove them. Bring proof, and ask exactly how your experience will be counted.

Bring proof of your driving history

  • Your foreign licence, showing the date you were first licensed.
  • A driving record or letter from your home country’s licensing authority, translated if it is not in English or French.
  • A letter of experience from your previous insurer, showing years insured and any claims.

How insurers treat foreign experience

Some insurers give credit for foreign experience from certain countries and some give little or none. Some accept a letter of experience and others want official records. Ask your agent which proof will be accepted before you buy.

Avoid these common mistakes

  • Insuring the car under a relative’s name when you are the main driver. It can lead to a denied claim.
  • Letting your coverage lapse while you switch licences. Gaps raise your price later.
  • Buying the car before getting a quote. The model you choose can double the price.
  • Buying insurance from anyone who is not licensed. Check that your agent or broker is licensed in Ontario.

Common questions

Can I get insured with a foreign licence?

For a limited time after arriving, yes. You will need an Ontario licence to keep driving and stay insured. Check the current rules for your country with ServiceOntario.

Do you serve clients in languages other than English?

Tell us your preferred language on the quote form and we will do our best to match you.
