Car insurance for G1 and G2 drivers in Ontario

New drivers pay more because insurers have little history to go on. The good news: the price usually drops as you build experience, and a few choices early on make a real difference.

G1 drivers

A G1 driver practises with an experienced driver in the car, usually in a family vehicle. Tell the insurer as soon as a G1 driver is in the household. Many insurers want them listed even before they drive regularly.

G2 and newly licensed G drivers

Once you drive alone, how you are listed matters. Being the principal driver of your own car costs more than being an occasional driver on a parent’s car, but you have to list yourself truthfully. Insurers can deny claims when a driver was listed incorrectly.

Ways to lower the cost

  • Complete a government-approved driver education course and keep the certificate for your agent.
  • Choose a modest, less-stolen car. Insurance on a sporty or high-theft model can cost more than the car payment.
  • Try a usage-based program that rewards smooth driving.
  • Keep your record clean. Tickets in the first few years add up fast.
  • Bundle with the household’s home or tenant policy.

Common questions

Does experience outside Ontario count?

Often, if you can prove it. See our guide to car insurance for newcomers.

When will my rate go down?

Usually as you gain claims-free, ticket-free experience, especially when you reach your full G licence. Ask for a review at each renewal.

This guide is general information, not advice for your situation. Coverage depends on your insurer and your policy wording. Ask a licensed agent before making changes.
